If you’re the kind of person who would rather be climbing mountains and swimming with sharks than laying on the beach sipping cocktails, then welcome to the club. Adventure travel is one of the most exciting ways to see the planet and get that adrenaline pumping. If you’re stuck for ideas of where to go, however, then we’ve got some great suggestions for you. Here are six destinations for adventurous travelers.
Tanzania
If you’re a regular reader of Impulse Odyssey, then you’ll know I recently went on a hot air balloon safari in Tanzania– and what an incredible adventure it was! There’s something so magical about flying above the Serengeti plains, seeing all of the animals coming out to feed as the sun comes up.
However, that’s not all there is to do in Tanzania. There are plenty of adventures to be had, including climbing the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest peak in Africa.
Peru
No list of adventure destinations would be complete without the Inca Trail in Peru. Four days of hiking this trail will take you to the jaw-dropping ancient city set high in the Andes Mountains. Plenty of people have Machu Picchu on their bucket list, and for good reason, too.
Peru has plenty of other adventures to experience if you want to hang around after the trek. I’d highly recommend checking out the Peruvian part of the Amazon jungle, along with trying some of the exotic foods that Peru is famous for, such as ceviche and lomo saltado (stir-fried beef).
Historic Route 66
While the original Route 66 may have been removed back in 1985, you can still rent a car and drive down the Historic Route 66 instead– starting from Lake Michigan and ending in LA. There are so many things to see and do across the 2,000+ mile route, so you’ll definitely want to spend a few weeks lapping it all up. Hire a classic car (a Mustang would be amazing) and get prepared for the adventure of a lifetime.
Sri Lanka
Volunteer in an animal sanctuary, explore many of the hidden caves, go whale watching, hike or camp in the jungle, swim with sharks… what can’t you do in Sri Lanka? The best thing about here is that once you’re finished with all of the adventure, you can spend a few days just chilling on the beach and soaking up the sunshine. Sri Lanka is the best of both worlds for adventure travelers.
Queensland
You haven’t lived until you’ve gone scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, situated just off the coast of Queensland. Unfortunately, this isn’t the kind of thing that’s going to be around forever, and so you’ll want to see it quick before it disappears completely.
Make sure you invest in a good quality underwater cameraso you can take some stunning photos of the marine life all around you. Then come up for air and hit the surfing scene.
Thailand
Thailand is one of those places you could spend months in – if your visa lets you! Whatever kind of adventure experience you want to have, there’s a good chance you can have it in Thailand. Snorkel or enjoy watersports in the Phi Phi Islands, attend one of the famous Full Moon Parties, or even skydive in Chonburi.
One important thing to note is that it’s a legal requirement to have travel insurance in Thailand. You’ll definitely want to let your insurer know if you’re going to be going on thrill-seeking adventures while you’re there.
So, there we have it! Six epic destinations for those who love adventure travel. Have you got any others to add to the list? Let us know in the comments.
