Kangaroo Island has among the most fascinating nature and wildlife in the entire world. Koalas live in the tree tops while kangaroos and wallabies roam the beautiful landscapes. Every part of the island has something new to offer. Our time here was a non-stop adventure!
How to get to Kangaroo Island
To reach the island, you must drive an hour south of Adelaide and then take a ferry from Cape Jervis directly to the Kangaroo Island port (Penneshaw). Book your ferry with a company called Sealink. On the island, I recommend a 4×4 vehicle; however we decided to take a Toyota Corolla off-roading and it worked out gloriously…
The island itself is quite small as it takes about three hours to drive east to west and about an hour to drive north to south. We camped three nights and four days on the island, exploring every nook and cranny. You can spend as little as a day or as much as an entire week here because there is tons to see.
Here are the most exciting places to visit:
Parndana: Feed wallabies, kangaroos, koalas, and other wild animals.
Cape Linois: Hands down the best view on the southern part of the island. Best place for camping and seeing stars at night.
Vivonne Bay: Gorgeous aquamarine waters. Seal Bay is a nearby attraction where you can snorkel and watch thousands of seals and sea lions.
Western River Cove: Secret local spot on the north side of the island that is perfect for camping. Drive through winding foothills filled with kangaroos to get to the beach.
Little Sahara: Go sand-boarding on massive natural dunes.
Flinders Chase National Park: Located on the western part of the island, this park has many exhilarating hikes, caves, and a variety of wild animals.
Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: Koalas roam freely here from tree to tree. Mothers can be seen with their young babies and you can walk right up to them. Absolutely amazing!
All of Kangaroo Island seemed like it was directly out of a movie. The views looked cinematic and the experiences with the wild animals were unreal. Definitely at the top of my Australian highlights list. Till next time!
