Factoring in cost, quality of life, and ease of access, here is a quick selection of the best vacations to go on this winter. No matter what your travel preference, there’s a perfect place in this world for you to enjoy the final moments of 2017.
Travel in late January
Everywhere on earth that has warm weather in the winter has its peak season for hotel rates from Christmas through the first week of January. If you are joining this crowd, you will surely overpay. The good news is that by the second week of January, hotel rates and airfares will fall from “peak season” rates. If you can wait, it will save you quite a bit. Here are my best vacation recommendations for Winter 2017.
Reykjavik, Iceland
This is as close as you are going to get to the north-pole on a quick trip. The capital city of Reykjavik is filled with viking chants and carols, as nordic festivities take place on every street corner. A massive Christmas tree overlooks the city center, Christmas markets fill the town, and plenty of real-life jolly ole Santas are out and about.
If high-intensity adventure is more your style, you can take part in these activities nearby: Hiking, caving, swimming the world famous blue lagoon, glacier trekking, super jeep tours, snowmobiling, frozen waterfall exploration & northern lights sightseeing. Check out my Iceland guide for more help to plan your winter trip.

Tokyo, Japan
This city becomes quite the dazzling center of attraction in the winter time. Christmas lights mixed with sophisticated decorations remind you that this is the country of ultimate innovation. Activities near Tokyo include: world class shopping, skiing & snowboarding, relaxing in hot springs, attending the many winter festivals such as Tori no Ichi, and of course – being the first in the world to celebrate the New Year!
Tokyo is as intense as you want it to be. You can dance the night away in fast-paced night clubs, sit in the city center and eat sushi, or find peace in various temple retreats in nature. All of these activities will make your winter holiday a blast.

San Jose, Costa Rica
If you are looking for the adventure tourism capital of Latin America, look no further. Costa Rica is your perfect fit. From zip-lining and surfing to feeding monkeys and crocodiles, you can easily find a variety of outdoor activities to fulfill all adrenaline needs.
Leaving the cold winter for this tropical escape is exactly what you deserve! Explore the famous Arenal Volcano, take a dip in the relaxing mud baths, or activate your inner Indiana Jones and journey through the Costa Rican rainforest. Check out my adventures in Costa Rica for more help to plan your winter trip.

Bali, Indonesia
Located 500 miles south of the equator, Bali has a distinctly tropical climate. One of the biggest events of the winter is Nyepi, the Balinese equivalent to New Year’s Eve. It is a massive celebration, but also a time of introspection. A day of silence is celebrated and filled with fasting and meditation. You will never see the island so calm. The dates of Nyepi vary each year.
A vacation to Bali is focused on relaxation and exploration. Visit the exquisite island temples, become Tarzan while swinging through the Ubad jungle, or just enjoy the awe-inspiring beaches!

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Because the winter holidays occur during the Argentinian summer, it feels more like the Fourth of July than Christmas. Most of the celebrating goes down on Nochebuena, (midnight on December 24th), where locals host wild parties and light up fireworks to kick off one of the best parties of the year.
Buenos Aires has the largest European influence in all of South America. Tango dancers fill the streets, sensational cooking aromas fill the air, and a high quality of life is experienced all around. Check out my Experiences in Buenos Aires for more help to plan your winter trip.
